Lemon Verbena
Aloysia triphylla
(L'Her.) Britton
Louisa is an herb originally from South America, brought to Europe by the Spanish at the end of the 17th century along with other plants. It is named after the Spanish queen Maria Luisa of Parma. The plant thrived in Greece and is now widespread.
Cook
Verbena has a lemony aroma and goes perfectly with fish, chicken, salads, soups, and marinades. It can also be used in various desserts, as well as in refreshing sorbets, ice creams, fruit salads, and drinks. Not to be forgotten is that it can be used instead of lemon, along with other herbs, in herbal teas, or prepared with a little honey or milk to make a soothing tea.
Traditional characteristics
Traditionally, vervain is used as an infusion to treat indigestion, stomach aches, diarrhea, and colitis. It can also help with migraines and bad breath. Vervain has a calming effect and antioxidant properties, which, combined with its lemony flavor, make for a wonderful evening tea. Vervain infusion also acts as a diuretic, can help eliminate kidney stones, and reduce water retention that can lead to cellulite. In combination with exercise and a healthy diet, it can aid in weight loss. However, you should not drink more than two cups per day, take a two-week break after two weeks of use, and not consume the tea for more than eight weeks per year.
It should be avoided during pregnancy and by people with low blood pressure.
