Peppermint
(Mentha x

Peppermint was used in ancient Greece, where it was rubbed on the tables when guests were expected. Its Latin name, Mentha, comes from the ancient Greek myth of the nymph Minthi, with whom Pluto fell in love and whom Persephone, out of jealousy, transformed into a plant. Since Pluto could not undo this, he gave it the fragrance we know today to sweeten the air around her. Peppermint is a natural hybrid of water mint and spearmint, first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753.


Cooking
Peppermint has a distinctive, refreshing, and peppery flavor. As a spice, it can be used for rice, vegetables, salads, marinades for fish, pasta, sauces, and soups. Why not try the classic English recipe for lamb with mint sauce? When cooking, be careful, as it should only be added towards the end, otherwise it will lose its flavor. Peppermint can also be used in desserts,liqueurs, and refreshing drinks.


Traditional characteristics
Traditionally, peppermint is used as a tea to treat colds and sore throats. It can also be inhaled to clear blocked noses, as it is rich in the natural organic compound menthol. It has a stimulating and aphrodisiac effect, and the cooling sensation it causes increases metabolism, especially when applied topically. Due to its muscle-relaxing properties, mint can help with gastrointestinal issues, anxiety, irregular menstrual cycles, and pain.
